Dan Freund, 32, has that clean-cut 1940s "all American" boy look; the warm smile, polite and a rather quiet demeanor. Looks can be deceiving.

"'Round the Square," the city's first online sitcom, just hit the halfway point in its pilot season.

Michael Robert Berry, co-creator with C. Daniel Freund, said the show is "like 'Friends,' but set in Portsmouth."

There are certainly some similarities, and "'Round the Square" even shows one character holding a box set of "Friends" and complimenting the show.
But since I never liked "Friends" — as an Anglophile, I prefer the British version, "Coupling" — I don't want to force that comparison.

PORTSMOUTH — "'Round the Square" is a sitcom that's poised to launch online and, potentially, become the city's favorite not-so-guilty pleasure.

"It's like 'Friends,' but set in Portsmouth," said writer/director Michael Robert Berry. "Or as we call it, 'America's favorite little port city.'"

"'Round the Square" will debut at 10:45 a.m. today on www.shortstream.tv.

The concept went from vague idea to reality over the course of a single beer.

Videographer Dan Freund began working several months ago on a series of profiles highlighting Portsmouth’s artists and professionals, but he lacked a forum to share his videos with the community. The city has long been working to establish a public access television station, but that process has dragged on for years. Freund chatted with multi-media guru John Herman over a beer at The Press Room.

Daniel (Dan) Freund was having a meeting with "MediaMan" John Herman, (that name AGAIN), a few weeks back; he wanted to run an idea by him, maybe get input. "We were at the Press Room. I was explaining my interest in developing an on-line media network," says Freund. "John buried his face in his laptop, saying nothing, and not paying attention." Or so he thought.
